There are 5 different type of non –verbal communication function such as reinforcement, contradiction, substitution ,accentuation, and regulation .By the help of all these function people can send messages and on the other side, the person is receiving messages by making the substance interaction more understandable. The following functions are as follow – (2009)
- Reinforcement– The number of redundancy non-verbal message add to the verbal text for example if you want to say ‘Hello’ or “Bye” you will probably wave or shake your hand .If you are hungry you will probably keep your hands on your stomach. If you have a headache you will keep your hands on your head. So there are with the help non – verbal communication person can tell what he want without speaking any word.
- Substitution –In non-verbal type of communication, you had a choice whether you will use action or cue rather than of speaking .For example, if you want to say hello to a person you can wave your hand while seeing him .If you don’t want to speak you can use non-verbal
- Contradiction – It is the function of non –verbal message to disgrace the verbal content for example if you asked how are you? And he says good but roll down his eyes and shrug his shoulder. Actually, he is not good and negated the verbal message that you have sent.
- Accentuation – In this, we can use non-verbal cues to escalate the verbal message for example if you are speaking loudly we can judge that you are happy because mostly person when they are happy they speak loudly to show their happiness and you quickly adding strength to the verbal interaction. We can tell if a person is speaking loudly and ant eyes are wide making the message clearer.
- Regulation –The turn taking the cue of conversational order for example if we use a hand signal to indicate that we are done taking and someone else wants to talk. We use non-verbal signal to show another person that you are listening to him, for example, you looking at him which signal him that he should speak what he want to and you are ready to listen to
